German Shepherd is among the most popular breeds in Russia. Same as Germany, Russia has extremely harsh rules and regulations for breeding working dogs. The dog must be evaluates by a breed qualified Judge and receive “Excellent” (no faults) or “Very Good” (minor faults) rating. As well, German Shepherd must have working title in obedience and protection. When the dog fulfils the Kennel Club and Breed Club requirements, including hips evaluation, she can be legally bred. Most German Shepherd people know DDR lines and Czech lines. However, Russian lines, somewhat similar to both, are not widely known in USA. Several German Shepherds were brought to Russia from Germany after WW2 as trophy, and Soviet Government strictly controlled dog breeding for years, until 1990ties. Working dogs were selectively bred to fit military requirements. After communist system collapsed, rules eased up, but old school dog breeders still striving to preserve true temperament, choosing linebreeding for working abilities versus breeding only for show looks. While it is impossible to produce all extra hard drive pups in each and every litter, there is always one or two that will impress any sport competition fancier. Breeding for preserving supreme intelligence and ability to protect the family is the key.
Haus Stesse concentrates on working lines German Shepherds, despite numerous wins at dog Shows in Russia and other countries. The conformation is important as the dog must be properly built to be able to function.
Most dogs with the "Schutzhund" title exported from Germany, are great looking, but usually their temperament will dissatisfy Russian professional trainer or helper. In Germany, relatively easy to obtain his title "Schutzhund dogs" because of its wide availability and accessibility. Majority of breeders in Germany breed for show dogs, and only a small percentage for working animals.
